Hymn 271 – Come Thou Almighty King – 10 October 2023, Anno Domini (In the Year of our Lord)

C

OME unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." 29 "Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls." 30 "For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." (Matthew 11:28-30)

Here is a hymn taken from the ‘General Hymns’ section of the 1940 Hymnal, Hymn 271; however, it is an excellent Trinitarian hymn. In fact, in Whitfield’s Handbook of Hymns as ‘An Hymn of the Trinity.’   The author is anonymous unless we consider it written at the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. The musical score is Moscow since it was written in Moscow shortly before its Italian composer, Felice de Giardini, died in 1769. – the same date this hymn first appeared in 1754 to the tune, America.

                        Come Thou Almighty King

Come, Thou Almighty King,

help us Thy name to sing;

help us to praise:

Father, all glorious,

o'er all victorious,

come, and reign over us,

Ancient of Days.

Come, Thou Incarnate Word,

gird on Thy mighty sword,

our pray'r attend:

come, and Thy people bless,

and give Thy Word success:

Spirit of holiness,

on us descend.

Come, Holy Comforter,

Thy sacred witness bear

in this glad hour:

Thou who almighty art,

now rule in every heart,

and ne'er from us depart,

Spirit of pow'r.

To Thee, great One in Three,

eternal praises be

hence, evermore.

His sov'reign majesty

may we in glory see,

and to eternity

love and adore!

1 Come, Thou Almighty King, help us Thy name to sing; help us to praise: Father, all glorious, o'er all victorious, come, and reign over us, Ancient of Days.

We must come by means of faith and grace ere the King will come for us. He is the King of Kings and there are none greater. We do sing of the Name of Jesus, and He has given us such majestic hymns as we see in this present one whose author, apart from God, is not known. He is not only the Ancient of Days pre-existent before the worlds were made, but He is also the Ancient Landmark that is the Word of God. Any alteration of His Word moves the Landmark that delineates all property lines of truth. God is His Father and He bears the same substance with Him.

2 Come, Thou Incarnate Word, gird on Thy mighty sword, our pray'r attend: come, and Thy people bless, and give Thy Word success: Spirit of holiness, on us descend

Our Lord is the Word that was made flesh and dwelt among us. (see John 1:14) His Word is His Two-Edged Sword, more powerful than any earthly sword. It cuts two ways – one to convict in mercy, and the other to condemn in judgment. He only blesses by way of the prayers of His people for this is His communication line. His Word ALWAYS comes from above and not from the altered devices of ungodly pretenders.

3 Come, Holy Comforter, Thy sacred witness bear in this glad hour: Thou who almighty art, now rule in every heart, and ne'er from us depart, Spirit of pow'r.

God is the Architect of Creation, Christ is the Executive, and the Holy Spirit is the power that moves in conformity to both. It was the Holy Ghost that moved upon the face of the waters at the Word of God. He is also our witness of truth in Christ. He boasts not of Himself, but points always to Christ. By power of the Holy Ghost, Christ abides in the presence of every heart that calls upon Him. He brings to our remembrance all things written in the Word of God concerning our Lord.

4 To Thee, great One in Three, eternal praises be hence, evermore. His sov'reign majesty may we in glory see, and to eternity love and adore!

God is One in Three Persons – all of one Mind, Spirit, and Purpose. If we are in Christ, we are also a part of that oneness with the Father, the son, and the Holy Ghost. Love is immutable, and if we love Him, we shall love Him for Eternity Future.
